The Department of Early Childhood Education at National Pingtung University (NPTU) organized an overseas study tour to Tokyo, Japan, as part of the "Special Education Classroom Practice" course during the second semester of the 2025 academic year. Led by Professor Chia-Yen Hsieh, the program included visits to Aiiku Gakuen and Aiiku Kindergarten, where students observed educational practices, participated in professional exchanges, and explored Japan's approaches to early childhood special education, inclusive education, and children's rights. The study tour aimed to broaden students' international perspectives while strengthening their professional competencies in special education.
Centered on the theme of Special Education Classroom Practice, the program provided students with firsthand opportunities to observe classroom instruction, learning environments, curriculum design, and teaching strategies for children with diverse developmental needs. Through discussions with educators and school professionals, participants gained a deeper understanding of Japan's child-centered educational philosophy, which emphasizes respecting each child's individuality, building trusting relationships, and supporting children according to their own pace of development.
In addition to classroom observations, the study tour introduced students to Japan's child protection and family support systems, including the Children's Ombudsperson and the Parent Consultation Support System. These professional support mechanisms help safeguard children's rights, facilitate communication between schools and families, and promote interdisciplinary collaboration. Through these exchanges, students were encouraged to compare educational systems in Japan and Taiwan and reflect on how these practices could contribute to the future development of inclusive education and children's rights in Taiwan.
Throughout the visits, students also observed that Japanese educators place strong emphasis on children's autonomy, experiential learning, and emotional well-being. Rather than directing every aspect of children's learning, teachers patiently accompany and guide children, allowing them to explore, make choices, and develop through authentic experiences. This educational philosophy not only reflects Japan's commitment to respecting individual differences but also inspired students to reconsider the role of educators as facilitators and companions in children's learning and development.
National Pingtung University remains committed to promoting international education and global engagement through overseas study programs and academic exchanges. This study tour provided valuable opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of special education, inclusive practices, and children's rights while cultivating intercultural competence, professional reflection, and comparative educational perspectives. The experience further demonstrates NPTU's ongoing commitment to preparing future educators with global awareness, professional excellence, and a strong dedication to quality education.
